Interleague Play Begins

The Subway Series... The North Side of Chicago versus the South Side... The Royals versus the Pirates (ok, that was too far).

Today marks the beginning of Interleague Play.  I enjoy these interleague games (I'd enjoy it more if the leagues were playing under the same set of rules) and given its success (ticket sales are generally stronger during Interleague Play), it is safe to assume that we're likely to see more interleague games before we see less.  With that in mind, I thought that I would once again highlight a few interleague talking points.

The American League is historically better...

The overall record is 1937-1773, in favor of the AL ball clubs (.522 winning percentage).  Since interleague play began in 1997, the American League has won more games than the National League in 11 out of 15 seasons.  Last year, the AL won 131 games, while the NL won 121.

The best interleague teams are the Yankees (.595 winning percentage) and the White Sox (.580 winning percentage).

The best NL interleage team is the Marlins (.535 winning percentage).

Dustin Pedroia is the best hitter in terms of batting average (.360).

Mark Buehrle has the most wins in interleague play history (24-6 all-time record).

Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter and Jim Thome are the respective leaders in saves, hits and home runs in interleague play history.

Randy Johnson has the most strikeouts in interleague history (309)
