Hall of Fame Debate - Jeff Bagwell
This week results will be announced for the Hall Of Fame. Jeff Bagwell is on the ballot for the first time. Does he get in? There has been speculation of steroids but nothing documented. In fact, he's failed no tests (I know they didn't test when he played) and he's made no lists of steroids users. I didn't read Canseco's books, but I haven't heard him accuse Bagwell either. I say that because Jose's been pretty accurate.
With that in mind, I put Bagwell in....On the first ballot. He has the stats. 449 HR's, 1529 RBI,1517 runs,.540 slugging %, .948 OPS. In only 15 years of playing! He also had a .297 lifetime ave. His career was cut short by arthiritis, in fact he couldn't hardly play his last year, appearing in only 39 games. He DH in the series that year, his only WS, going 1 for 8.
So my guess is he goes in first ballot. I also want to add that Roberto Alomar should get in this year also. Writers made him wait a year for spitting on an umpire and rightfully so.
I'm not sold on Bagwell as a first ballot guy... If robbie alomar doesn't deserve first ballot, I don't see how Bagwell does. Robbie was an all star 13 times... One of the best 2b of all-time. The question I have: does Jack Morris keep gaining momentum? He probably doesn't get in but do the numbers change enough to keep him in the discussion...

ReplyDeleteI think voters will lump Bagwell in with the maybees as far as steroids. I'm on the fence with Bagwell. Poor post season performance not very good. I probably would not vote for him 1st time. Alomar probably gets in because of position.
ReplyDeleteBagwell gets in, but not this year. This year will go to Blyleven and Alomar by default. Bagwell may make next year's ballot possibly with Morris...and that is a stretch. I think the days of first ballot HOF is over for a while becasue of the PED thing. Bagwell is esestially "clean" other than he was teammates with Caminitti.
ReplyDeleteI digress...I don't even like Morris for the HOF= not enough K's per season, ERA too high (3.9) and other than being a "big game pitcher" he pitched to contact and truly wasn't that dominant for any stretch of time, Maybe 4 years 83-87? and then again in 92(5 years just isnt enough)...otherwise good not great. I know the same thinking could lose out Bert McGirt but Bly guy has 5 seasons on Jack but he also has 1200 more K's, 30 more wins, I know thats only 6 wins per season but that's kinda a big margin considering its a +6 margin, a .59 better Era he also had 8 200+K season vs. Morris' 3. Oh yeah Morris played on better teams over his career, he started 13 playoff games and went 7-4 with a career 3.8 ERA being ineffective in DS but great in WS. Bly only got 6 starts in Postseason play and went 5-1 with a 2.87 ERA
You may be right about Bagwell, we'll see. If Blyleven doesn't make it this year, he never makes it. Yes, he should make it before Morris does.
ReplyDeletei like morris and he pitched in big games but he doesnt have great era. he will eventually get in. i lost any respect for him when he said what a dream pitching in my hometown minnesota winning world series in 91. following year bluejays make him offer that equalled what twins offered him in us currency he says thanks see ya bye minnesota. cant blame him for pitching on a better team but the way he conducted himself about the dream big turn off.
ReplyDeleteonly reason im suspicious of bagwell is yeah he passed every test we know of but i dont think he hit more than 15 homers in a minor league season. but again im having suspicions of pujols and thome now also. thanks bud selig!
